Veteran fitness pro still passionate about what she does

Tammy Christensen admits that “I’m not 20 anymore,” but the veteran Pilates instructor and personal trainer still loves what she is doing after more than two decades of helping people in the Bay Area get fit – further proof that age is just a number when you have a passion for something.

“I started in the early 90′s as a student of fitness,” she says. “I loved it, it empowered me, and it gave me confidence I had never had before. Then, I was asked to fill in for an instructor one day, and I fell in love with teaching. It was so much fun to see others gain the same confidence I had felt by seeing my body change and feeling great. I have always loved people, and I knew I had found a way to give back to people by helping them to change in so many positive ways. One of my early mentors used to tell me to go out and ‘Change a Life’, and I’ve been trying to do that ever since.”

Tammy has worked for most of top health clubs in the Bay Area over the past 20 years including 24-Hour Fitness, Bally Total Fitness, Fitness 19, Fit Studios, and the Big C Athletic Club.  She currently serves as Group Exercise Director for Bay Area Family Fitness Center in Pleasanton where she will be heading a new Gravity Power Pilates program with the revolutionary Gravity Training System (GTS).

“The Gravity Power Pilates Program combines the best of Gravity Training, Pilates, and Personal Training.  It is a fun and innovative program that provides full body conditioning through resistance training or Pilates. Our small group training sessions will be monitored for maximum results in just 50 minutes, and I promise you the workout of your life,” she chuckles.

“I took my first Pilates training about 5 years into my personal training career,”  she remembers,  “and I fell in love with it. It was the missing link for me. I cover everything – balance, strength, flexibility, core and endurance,” she says enthusiastically, “and now the GTS adds an entirely new dimension.”

“Pilates is just something you have to experience,” says Tammy.” I will probably do it (Pilates) forever, because I know it has improved my quality of life, and I will be able to maintain this quality of life as I grow older. I am already so inspired by some of my older clients – many more than 80 years old – and it amazes me see the difference in their attitude and vitality compared to others the same age who do not. Have you ever heard an elderly person who just complains about his or her aches and pains all the time? I’m not going to be that person, and neither are any of my clients.”

In addition to teaching Gravity Power Pilates at Bay Area Family Fitness, Tammy also owns her own home-based Pilates studio – Pilates Bodies – in Danville where she lives with her husband, Kevin (also a fitness professional), and Kevin’s son Tomas, 14, together with pooches Lydia, and Skyy, their 10-year-old mixed labs.  Tammy has two grown sons, Jeremy – a chef – and  Joshua – a writer – and Kevin has three grown daughters.

“My family is very important to me,” she says unabashedly.  “I love to create quality time with all of our children, and I savor every day with family and friends.”

“I had a brother with whom I was very close who died of a heart attack at the age of 36, she says, “and I’m sure that is probably part of my motivation to stay fit and healthy and share it with others.  Maybe he’s still with me in a sense.”

Maybe?

She’s rarely seen without her boyfriend by her side, and now Vanessa Hudgens has even taken to working out with Austin Butler.

The 23-year-old star was spotted leaving the gym with her younger beau yesterday after a joint effort at some exercise and as per usual Hudgens looked smitten.

Despite wearing no make-up and being in her gym gear, the High School Musical star wasn’t bothered about Butler seeing her like that.

As they left the exercise class in Studio City, California, the brunette showed off her enviable figure in a pair of tiny grey shorts and black vest that highlighted her toned midriff.

Hudgens, who has just been nominated for a 2012 Teen Choice Award for her work in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, teamed the outfit with a pair of trainers and large dark sunglasses.

The actress was still wearing her earphones and carried a large flask of water as she strolled in the sunshine.

Butler, on the other hand, was less cheery and kept his head down while also wearing a pair of sunglasses.

The actor was perhaps feeling a little worn out following their workout and was maybe desperate to take a shower.

The happy couple clearly enjoy exercising together as the day before they were spotted leaving a yoga lass together.

But as well as exercising daily, Hudgens and Butler also like to dine out regularly and were seen leaving a restaurant this week with boxes of their leftovers.

Partners working out together? Shocker, who doesn’t work out with their partners, It’s normal. And of course she wasn’t bothered about Butler seeing her like that, its called being in a relationship, people dont find others less attractive if they are wearing gym gear? What a weird article.

Nice LEGS!!!

They aren’t teeny tiny shorts they are just workout shorts! She hardly wants to work out in jeans!

Oh I love these two. They really seem to have the right idea. I think Vanessa is my favourite actress of the moment. What with all the photo’s of Miley cyrus getting pin thin and cutting out gluten literally seconds after banging on about how women should have curves and defending her right to look feminine, it’s great to see a young actress that exercises AND eats cake, reminding young women how the two can coincide harmoniously providing balance and moderation are applied. Miley’s message is so confusing and inconsistent. She’s obviously not comfortable in her own skin. Vanessa, by contrast, obviously is. She should be though, coz she’s absolutely gorgeous!

thought it was snookie

where is her neck??

does anyone thinks she wears extensions? because i thought she had her hair cut short like a couple of months ago..

They work out together in more than one ways.

are the exercises that suit me and my body and that I enjoy so I stick to that. I have been doing yoga for over 12 years now, I like the physical and mental effect it has on me,” she said.

Kerr says staying healthy and looking good is very important to her so takes the best possible care of her body by exercising every day.

“I work out a lot and eat healthily. I think that health is wealth and it is important to keep your body in shape, inside and out. I try to exercise every day, even if it is just for 30 minutes. Five Questions: Randy Jackson on Type 2 diabetes

Randy Jackson is known for providing measured critiques to aspiring singers on Fox’s “American Idol,” but in his private life, he’s had to analyze something entirely different: After a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes nine years ago, the music industry veteran needed to reevaluate his diet and lifestyle.

Jackson went from piling his plates high with fried food and counting riding in a golf cart as exercise to eating veggies with every meal and working out every day. He talked to us about how his diagnosis changed his life and how he hopes to help others.

What made you decide to go public with your story?

There wasn’t a lot of information readily available when I was diagnosed — I didn’t know I had diabetes, I thought I had a cold or flu or something.

Like me, there are a lot of people walking around that don’t know they have it, so I want to get the awareness out — especially since diet and exercise are such big contributors to Type 2 diabetes. The website for a program I’ve partnered with, Taking Diabetes to Heart, http://www.takingdiabetestoheart.com, is chock full of information.

What have you changed about your lifestyle since your diagnosis?

Everything! I was eating like I was still in the South, like a crazy wild man, and I wasn’t working out. I was playing a lot of golf and I thought that was a workout, but if you’re using the cart, with the hot dogs and the beer, it’s not.

So I looked at my whole diet and the things I was doing in excess, and bread was a huge culprit — bread and rice. I’d take both at a time, because in the South, everything has rice with it. So eventually I had to really try to get just one of those at a time.

I also learned along the way to make small incremental changes as opposed to big sweeping changes. For instance, I learned to love spaghetti squash. I’m eating more broccoli and cauliflower that I never thought I would.

I’m exercising too — I do yoga, Pilates, I have a gym at my house, and I play tennis.

People have a really hard time making lifestyle changes for diabetes. What motivated you?

Being in the emergency room when I got my diagnosis and the doctor saying, “There’s no cure, but you can live a healthy, full life if you manage it and control it and contain it.” That kind of stops you in your tracks.

Tell me the No. 1 tip you would give to a person struggling with a new diabetes diagnosis.

I wrote a book some years ago, and in it I talked to a behavioral psychologist, because when you talk about diet, you need to change your habits. It’s hard for people to change habits — it takes months to make them but years to break them.

So I would suggest people go to a psychologist, or sit down with somebody and talk about what happens before you dive into that bucket of ice cream, or you have that cake, or you’re drinking eight glasses of wine. Diet is tied to emotion as well.

The music industry isn’t necessarily known for its commitment to health. How do you stay on track when there’s temptation around?

I’m not surrounded by that much temptation anymore. You know — on the “Idol” set everybody’s on some fresh juice fast all the time.

But it’s a change of mind and a change of heart — I had to change the way that I look at food. I have to say, “Wait a minute, I can’t be eating the cake and the muffins and the pies and hope that I don’t get sick.” That’s not an option for me.

Miranda Kerr credits ‘everyday exercise’ for amazing body

Washington, May 18 (ANI): Miranda Kerr, who is famed for her amazing figure, has revealed that she exercises every day to keep in shape.

The Australian model, who rose to prominence as one of the Victoria’s Secret Angels, admitted that staying healthy and looking good is very important to her, which is why she takes the best possible care of her body.

“I work out a lot and eat healthily. I think that health is wealth and it’s important to keep your body in shape, inside and out,” Contactmusic quoted her as telling Britain’s OK! magazine.

“I try to exercise every day, even if it’s just for 30 minutes. Even running around after my little one-year-old is like a workout in itself, plus I love to walk everywhere.”

Miranda says she enjoys the exercise but admits it can sometimes be a tough task.

“I enjoy the exercise that I do, so that keeps me motivated.

“There are times when it’s tough, or you don’t feel like it but once I get my workout gear on and I’m there I usually find that I can get into it and I enjoy it!

“I love yoga, I practice Pilates and light weights. They are the exercises that suit me and my body and that I enjoy so I stick to that.

“I’ve been doing yoga for over 12 years now – I like the [physical and mental] effect it has on my body,” she added. (ANI)
